Beavers, Bears, and Pristine Waters: Experience Whistler’s Famous Rivers and Lakes

Posted: August 23rd, 2010 ;      by M_Davies

Long before there was a ski hill, visitors first flocked to the area to explore Whistler, BC’s pristine and beautiful lakes and rivers. Today, Backroads Whistler lets you experience the resort’s most iconic waterways on unforgettable canoe and kayak tours. Paddle the legendary River of Golden Dreams or historic Alta Lake – site of the early 1900’s fishing lodge that started it all. Discover Whistler’s original summer activity, and so much more.

 According to Backroads Whistler:

“The River of Golden Dreams is still looking great at the moment. The water level in the river is still good, and the beaver dams are giving a fun ‘swoosh’ as people paddle over them, onto the ripples on the downstream side. Everybody who paddles the river with us is having a terrific time; picking people up at the end of their tour in the bus is a fun job, as everyone has big smiles on their face.

The river seems to be coming alive with the animals our guests are seeing. Beavers are being seen regularly by our guests, and bears have been making frequent appearances.”

Make the most of these Summer days and book your Whistler vacation now. With camping rates starting at $26 per night, and RV’ers offered a special deal of  one night for $39, stay three nights for $99, or stay one week for $199. Visit WhistlerRVPark.com to book.

Coming Soon to Whistler: the Mountain’s own Half Marathon!

Posted: August 20th, 2010 ;      by M_Davies

Whistler Friends announce plans for annual running event starting next June.

Organizers of a new athletic event in Whistler are hoping to take your breath away — in a good way. The Whistler Friends, a local fundraising organization, this week announced plans for a half marathon road running event with the first annual race set for June 4, 2011. “It will be hands down one of the most scenic runs in Canada… breathtaking in a good way,” said Dave Clark, race director and Whistler Friends co-founder. Clark made a presentation to Whistler council about the half marathon on Tuesday (Aug. 17) and a launch event was held Wednesday (Aug. 18) at the Crystal Lodge. Feedback has been good so far and people are “excited” about the event, he said. The 21.1-kilometre half marathon is the fastest growing distance in the sport of running, Clark said, quoting a statistic that 600,000 people in the U.S. completed at least one half marathon in 2007.

The Whistler Friends chose a half marathon because it’s not currently offered in Whistler, and there’s a great opportunity to draw runners in a growing discipline, he said. While the goal for the first year is to attract about 300 runners from the Sea to Sky and Lower Mainland, Clark’s vision for the long-term future of the event includes a maximum of 2,000 participants with people coming from farther away. The nearer-term goal is to grow to 750 runners by year five, he added. “I think we’ll see people travelling a fair distance to come to the event in years to come,” he said. In addition to the run itself, a runner’s expo, awards ceremony and pre-race carbo-load dinners are also planned for the June 2011 weekend.

The expo will be open to the public and offer partners and related businesses to showcase their products and the latest in running gear, Clark said. Carbo-load dinners are a tradition for distance running events, he said, and the goal is to offer two such events the night before the race. The idea for the awards ceremony is to make it a fun, festive event styled on a Whistler après theme, he said. The overall goal is to create a unique, well-managed and memorable half marathon event that will get people talking and excited to run in Whistler every year, Clark said. “The running experience here is just so unbelievable,” he said. “I think that alone will draw people.” Clark said the route for the 21.1 kilometre road race has not been finalized yet, but it will include the Village and nearby neighbourhoods. He said the route will take participants past lakes, rivers, amazing viewpoints and through stands of trees. There will be some hills, but the aim is to keep them as short and shallow as possible. The route won’t be the “flattest or fastest” one around, but it won’t be the most challenging either, he said.

he race will include men’s, women’s, wheelchair and visually impaired divisions. As with all Whistler Friends events, the half marathon will have a fundraising component with a percentage of every paid registration to be donated to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. Participants can also collect pledges to make additional donations to the foundation. Whistler Friends was founded by Clark and his wife Wendy in 2002. They organize annual fundraising events in Whistler such as Balding For Dollars and the tasting pass component of the Canadian National BBQ Championships.

Whistler Friends has raised more than $200,000 to date for the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Crohn’s and colitis foundation. Clark said the organization is in the process of incorporating as a non-profit society, with an eye to positioning itself as a non-profit event producer. “We’re trying to create events that inspire people,” he said. The idea to organize a half marathon in Whistler has been brewing for about four years, but it was the success of last September’s slideshow and live music event, called Swell, that gave the Whistler Friends the confidence to move ahead with the idea, Clark said. Organizers are still seeking partners and sponsors for the half marathon and related events, and there are a number of ways businesses can get involved, he said. Social media marketing plans are rolling out this week and race registration is expected to open in January. Find out more and sign up for updates at whistlerhalfmarathon.com.

First it was a mine that exploded in the middle of the Moroccan desert. Years later, it was a stray bullet that lodged in his brain… Bazil doesn’t have much luck with weapons. The first made him an orphan, the second holds him on the brink of sudden, instant death.

Released from the hospital after his accident, Bazil is homeless. Luckily, our inspired and gentle-natured dreamer is quickly taken in by a motley crew of junkyard dealers living in a veritable Ali Baba’s cave. The group’s talents and aspirations are as surprising as they are diverse: Remington, Calculator, Buster, Slammer, Elastic Girl, Tiny Pete and Mama Chow.

Then one day, walking by two huge buildings, Bazil recognizes the logos of the weapons manufacturers that caused all of his misfortune. He sets out to take revenge, with the help of his faithful gang of wacky friends. Underdogs battling heartless industrial giants, our gang relive the battle of David and Goliath, with all the imagination and fantasy of Buster Keaton.

Next “can’t miss event” at Whistler: The Red Bull 5000 Down!

Posted: August 17th, 2010 ;      by M_Davies

For a second year, Red Bull 5000 Down hits Whistler Blackcomb with a mass start downhill mountain bike race. On September 11th and 12th, mountain bikers will gather at the peak of Whistler Mountain, at Whistler Blackcomb Resort in British Columbia and will descend more than 2,182 metres (7,159 feet) and a vertical of 1,530 metres (5,020 feet) in order to cross the finish line in the Whistler Village. All riders will need to sustain constant physical and mental effort to maintain control during the entire descent, which will take approximately 20 minutes for the fastest participants.

Red Bull 5000 Down features 250 men and women starting simultaneously from the snow-capped peak of Whistler Mountain. Fly down past the Roundhouse Lodge, riders will enter the world-famous Whistler Mountain Bike Park at the top of the Garbanzo Express chairlift, before riding the Park’s giant slalom course and then finally crossing the finish line in Whistler Village. Over the course of two days, participants will be challenged by bar-to- bar racing as they battle side-by-side, dealing with fatigue and navigating through dirt trails riddled with jumps, stunts, drops and root-strewn terrain.

The event will draw some of the greatest North American and European riders to Whistler Blackcomb. Among the riders will be a combination of the sport’s emerging and established superstars, including 2008 World Champions Gee Atherton and Rachel Atherton, Red Bull Rampage 2009 winner Brandon Semenuk, Stevie Smith, Darren Berrecloth, Matti Lehikoinen and Filip Polc. The top five men will share a cash purse of $9,500 and the top three women will share $3,500.

Crankworks 2010 Highlights

Posted: August 16th, 2010 ;      by M_Davies

Bike Radar.com reported on this past weekends Crankworx festival in Whistler B.C, check out what they thought of the early weekend’s highlights:

The Kokanee Crankworx mountain bike festival kicked off on August 7 in Whistler, Canada, with a packed schedule of racing, slopestyle and trials action.

Early highlights included a record-breaking win by CRC-Intense’s Chris Kovarik in the Monster Energy Garbanzo DH, billed as the world’s longest downhill race, and a storming performance by Gee Atherton (Commencal) in the dual slalom. Here’s the lowdown on the first six days.

Dual Slalom: Gee Atherton captures the win

With big-time contender Brian Lopes (Ibis-Oakley) crashing out in the first heat of the Pro Men dual slalom semi-finals, Britain’s Gee Atherton (Commencal) managed to fend off young guns Troy Brosnan (Monster Energy-Specialized) and Mitch Ropelato to secure the win on a course that included rhythm sections, a mogul field, tight berms, jumps and drops.

American Ropelato, 18, looked like he might have victory in the bag after winning the holeshot in the first of the two final runs but he crashed, letting Atherton gain the advantage going into the second run. Mick Hannah took third, and fellow Australian Troy Brosnan fourth. “I was playing calm, cool and collected,” said Atherton “It’s quite unexpected, but I’m feeling really stoked. You have to stay calm and have fun. I really enjoyed that.”

In the Pro Women race, there was a home winner in the shape of Micayla Gatto from Vancouver’s North Shore but a disappointing turnout of just four riders. In each of the two final runs, France’s Emmeline Ragot (Suspension Centre) got the holeshot but Gatto was able to regain the advantage with power and quick turns. Jill Kintner (USA|Transition) finished third and Melissa Buhl (USA) fourth.

What makes Whistler RV Park unique

Posted: August 10th, 2010 ;      by M_Davies

What makes our RV Park unique? Having gorgeous views of Black Tusk Mountain without even leaving your RV? Being so close to Whistler and yet in a wonderful quiet environment? Most likely. But there is one thing for sure no other Campground has: Ben, our campground mascot. The most photogenic dog you might have met. Ben is living at Whistler RV Park during this summer with our wonderful Camp hosts Kevin and Rich. And he has been quite busy, checking out Whistler and learning what there is to see and to do. See yourself!

The biggest bike festival of its kind: Crankworx in Whistler, Aug 7 to 15

Posted: August 6th, 2010 ;      by M_Davies

From air-infused downhills to dirt dominatrix dual slaloms, massive slopestyle stunts to epic enduros, for seven years running the venues at the Whistler Mountain Bike Park have served as a supercharged magnet for the world’s best gravity fueled mountain bike athletes. This year, Kokanee Crankworx promises to do what it’s become so famous for.

Few sports have grown as quickly or in as many directions as mountain biking, and in many ways Whistler has always been ahead. Trails like “A River Runs Through It” changed the way people looked at bikes, while the Whistler Mountain Bike Park - now in its 11th year – changed the sport entirely. Mountain resorts across North America and Europe are scrambling to recreate that experience, as a way to earn revenues as well as to meet a growing demand from riders.

This year more effort has been placed on the spectacle, making events more spectator-friendly. According to Crankworx general manager Jeremy Roche, the goal is to stay on the cutting edge. “We’re going into our seventh year of Kokanee Crankworx and we really work hard to remain relevant and new,” Roche said. “[The festival] will have a similar look and feel, but we’ve really put the focus on the live show so people will be able to stroll into Skier’s Plaza or tune into the webcast and see a really high-end live show with solid production values - something that will really draw people in, and tell the exciting story of everything that exists around Crankworx.”

As well, the Deraylor music festival was able to attract some bigger names this year using the Marquee funding. Featuring over 40+ artists from around the globe, the music festival will live and breathe the lifestyle that surrounds this world renowned mountain biking festival.

Don’t miss it!

And don’t forget, accommodation is filling up quickly in Whistler, so plan your stay now! We have room for your RV or your tent at the park. If you want to be close to where the fun is at affordable rates, book now online or give us a call at 1-888-222-2154.
